The First Station: An Ancient Ocean
Think about the Megalodon the molars in West Java, Indonesia. Roughly 20 million years ago, the areas which are now dry land were part of warmer marine environments. Megalodon sharks were found in those prehistoric waters as well as countless other forms of marine life.
Megalodon like sharks are still producing and loses teeth. A few of the teeth were buried in sediments from the sea. In the right conditions, burial protected them so long that fossilization could occur.
Then geology came in.
The next chapter was extremely slowly. Sediments started to build up. Minerals were interacted with buried matter. The forces of geology changed landscapes, and submerged landscapes transformed into land. These processes explain why shoppers observe that genuine fossil megalodons are of different shades.
Indonesian specimens found in West Java’s Miocene Bentang Formation can be seen in a variety of shades, including tan or gold along with brown, red, and blue.
